April 2010

In April edition of our eCS newsletter, we will bring you up-to-speed on some exciting updates to the Connected Tennessee vwebsite, most notably the new and improved BroadbandStat and the release of our latest round of research data, Tennessee’s Technology Trends 2010. We’ll also bring you all the details about an innovative initiative recently launched by the State of Tennessee to equip Tennessee’s libraries with computer technology resources and training in order to strengthen rural communities and help the unemployed. We’ll show you how Connected Nation is working to help senior citizens across the country connect to the world by connecting to the Internet. Plus, whether you’re hitting the books or hitting the lake this summer, our valued partners at AT&T are going the extra mile to keeping you on the information highway. Earlier this month, a huge step forward for increasing broadband technology across the country was tvaken
when the Federal Communications Commission released its National Broadband Plan. The plan is designed to connect all corners of the nation while transforming the economy and society with the communications network of the future - robust, affordable Internet. We will break this plan down for you on page 2. Also in this month’s newsletter, we’ll provide a recap of our recent quarterly Steering Committee meeting. And if you are a techie that’s addicted to Twitter, we’ll bring you a list of 20 of the top tech experts who tweet!

We kick off the first eCS newsletter of 2010 by welcoming Alyson Sumerford to the role of State Operations Manager for the East Tennessee region. Alyson takes over the role from Corey Johns, who was recently named Senior Stakeholder Relations Manager for our parent company, Connected Nation. Get to know Alyson on page 2. Also in this month's newsletter, see why Connected Tennessee was recently in the spotlight on Capitol Hill and meet an innovative young man in Memphis who has taken job searching in Tennessee to a whole new level.

It’s been an exciting month for Connected Tennessee, capping off a banner year for broadband expansion in Tennessee. In this month’s newsletter, we’ll bring you the highlights from 2009. The most significant development happened just last week, when the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced the awarding of $1.8 million to the state of Tennessee and Connected Tennessee through The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The award will help Connected Tennessee deliver a comprehensive map of existing broadband service to the state, among other things.

We are proud to announce that our Computers 4 Kids program recently awarded all six of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis with brand new computers. Also in this month’s eCS newsletter, we’ll tell you about an online campaign that has Tennessee schools competing to win a whopping $100,000 prize to be used in any way they like to better their campuses. Plus, if you’re on the lookout for the perfect Christmas tree, no need to drive all over town – we’ve got a high-speed shortcut to help you locate your tree without ever leaving home! And did you know Tennessee is home to the world’s fastest computer? We’ll reveal where to find it in this month’s edition of “Did You Know?”

We are happy to announce that our Computers 4 Kids program is now an award-winning program! C4K was recently presented with a 2009 TechStar award for “Community Service” at an awards luncheon in Kingsport. We’ll tell you more about the award on page 2 and also reveal why Computers 4 Kids also recently took the national spotlight at an event in Washington D.C.
Also in this month’s eCS newsletter, we’ll introduce you to a group of West Tennesseans that are using broadband technology to showcase the accomplishments of some very special young men and women. Plus, October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and we’ve got tips from the experts on how to stay safe online. And if you live in Bradley County and need to sharpen your computer skills on a budget, you can now do so for free! We’ll tell you where.

In this month’s eCS newsletter, we’ll take you to the city of Gallatin to show you how local residents have banded together to connect their downtown area to the rest of the world. The second round of technology grants from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community were recently awarded and we will reveal which Tennessee counties were the lucky recipients. We will also bring you the story of an East Tennessee hospital that is turning to technology to help save lives. Plus, learn how parents in Bradley County have a new way to connect with teachers to keep up with their child’s progress in school – thanks to broadband technology!

In our August eCommunity Strategies newsletter, we'll take you to our “2,000th Computer” celebration event at the State Capitol, where we celebrated the milestone of touching 2,000 lives in Tennessee over the past 2 years with the gift of technology. Plus, the first round of technology grants from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community were recently awarded and we will reveal which Tennessee counties were the lucky recipients.
